Frequently asked questions.
What training methods do you use?
We use a balanced training approach that incorporates positive reinforcement, clear communication, and appropriate corrections when necessary. Our methods are designed to create a strong bond between you and your dog while ensuring they understand and respect commands.
Why do you recommend pinch collars and e-collars?
We recommend pinch collars and e-collars because they provide clear, consistent communication with your dog. When used correctly, these tools are safe and effective for training, helping to reinforce commands and discourage unwanted behaviors. We prioritize using high-quality brands to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort.
Is the use of a pinch collar or e-collar humane?
Yes, when used properly, pinch collars and e-collars are humane training tools. They allow for minimal corrections and clear guidance, helping your dog understand what is expected without causing harm. We focus on training you to use these tools effectively and responsibly.
How long does it take to train my dog?
The length of training depends on your dog’s age, temperament, and the specific behaviors being addressed. On average, basic obedience training can take several weeks I recommend 10 sessions at a minimum. While more advanced training or behavior modification may take longer. Consistency and practice at home are key to successful training.
Can my dog be trained off-lead?
Yes, with proper training and the right tools, your dog can be safely trained to be off-lead. We focus on teaching strong recall and responsiveness, using e-collars to maintain control and safety, especially in environments with potential distractions or hazards.
What age should I start training my dog?
Training can begin as early as 8 weeks old. Early training helps establish good behaviors and prevents the development of bad habits. However, dogs of any age can benefit from training, and it’s never too late to start.
How do I ensure continued success after training?
Consistency is key to maintaining your dog’s training. We provide you with the tools, techniques, and guidance needed to continue reinforcing good behaviors at home. Regular practice and follow-up sessions, if needed, will help ensure your dog remains well-trained and responsive.
What is crate training, and why is it important?
Crate training involves teaching your dog to see their crate as a safe and comfortable space. It’s important because it helps with house training, provides a secure environment for your dog when you’re not home, and can reduce anxiety by giving them a personal space to relax.
Is it okay to use the crate for punishment?
No, the crate should never be used as a form of punishment. The goal is for your dog to see the crate as a positive and safe space. Using it for punishment can create negative associations and lead to anxiety or reluctance to enter the crate.
What if my dog cries or whines in the crate?
It’s normal for dogs to cry or whine initially when adjusting to the crate. If your dog is crying, make sure they’ve had a chance to go to the bathroom and aren’t hungry or thirsty. If the basics are covered, wait a few minutes before letting them out, as responding immediately can reinforce the behavior. Gradually increase the time they spend in the crate to help them get used to it.
Where should my dog walk when on a leash?
Your dog should ideally walk beside you, with their shoulder aligned with your leg. This position helps establish you as the leader and keeps your dog focused on you, reducing the likelihood of pulling or getting distracted. Walking in this position also allows for better communication and control.
Should my dog walk on the left or right side?
Traditionally, dogs are trained to walk on the left side, particularly in competitive obedience. However, you can choose whichever side is most comfortable for you. The key is consistency, choose one side and stick with it so your dog knows where they should be during walks.
Why don’t harnesses work well for controlling a dog?
Harnesses often distribute pressure across the dog’s chest and shoulders, which can reduce their effectiveness in controlling pulling. Because harnesses don’t provide direct pressure on the neck, they may not discourage pulling as effectively as other tools, allowing the dog to use their body strength to pull ahead.
How can harnesses encourage pulling?
Harnesses can encourage pulling because they often lack the mechanism to correct or redirect the dog’s behavior. When a dog feels comfortable and unrestricted in a harness, they may use their full strength to pull forward. Unlike tools that apply pressure or correction when pulling occurs, harnesses do not provide the necessary feedback to discourage this behavior.
Why is it better to use a pinch collar instead of a harness?
Pinch collars provide more effective control by applying pressure in a way that encourages the dog to follow commands and reduces pulling. A pinch collar disperses pressure evenly around the neck, making it easier to manage their direction and behavior. These tools offer more precise control compared to a harness.
